What are the Different Types of Steroids Available?
Two types of steroids are found in the body.
Coritcosteroids
The adrenal gland, located above the kidney, is where corticosteroids are made. Aldosterone regulates sodium levels in the body. Cortisol plays a variety of roles in the body. It also acts as part the body’s stress response system, decreasing inflammation.
Prednisone and prednisolone are common corticosteroid drugs. They can be administered by mouth, intravenously or intramuscularly. These medications may be used to treat rheumatoid and inflammatory diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus and many other conditions in which inflammation is a part of the disease process.
Anabolic/androgenic Steroids
The androgenic/anabolic steroid group, which includes hormones that regulate testosterone production in the testicles or ovaries, is the second category of steroids. The anabolic portion of testosterone helps increase body tissue and protein production. The pituitary gland is located at the base and helps regulate hormone secretion and testosterone production. The pituitary gland secretes many hormones, including growth hormone and follicle stimulant hormone (FSH), which stimulate testis function and ovary function.
Prescription medications are available for anabolic and androgenic steroids. These can be used when the body doesn’t produce enough hormones and supplementation may need to be given. This pathway also includes growth hormone and testosterone. Although these medications can be legally prescribed by doctors, they are often illegally used and abused to increase athletic performance and improve the appearance of the body. What are the side effects of prolonged steroid abuse?

Side effects of steroids may be caused by excess androgen or anabolic drugs in the body.
Steroids can suppress the natural testosterone in the body. In males, this may result in a decrease of testicle size (atrophy), decreased production, fertility, and baldness. The excess steroid can also be converted into estrogen in males, which may cause enlarged breasts (known to as gynecomastia). Females may experience a deeper voice and changes in their menstrual cycle. They might also have an increase in hair production. Women may also experience baldness.
